Here is a great collection of British pub signs which I found over at colourlovers.
The pub is defiantly part of the British identity and with it comes the good old pub sign.

Pub signs are a visual record of the history of Britain, if you know how to interpret them. For example, the Burton and Manvers Arms no doubt celebrated local distinguished families. The Joiners Arms may have been a meeting place for those involved in the profession and acted as an unofficial employment exchange for people seeking work. The Victory records Admiral Lord Nelson’s achievements.
As you say, the pub is definitely part of the British identity.
One sign remains a mystery however. Whilst researching my book on the origin of pub names I did not encounter the Lion and Snake. If any visitors do know and would like to leave a comment on my blog, I’d be most grateful.
